How do we recognize ADHD today? We often rely on standard screening questionnaires. However, for boys and men, recognizing symptoms is often straightforward because they tend to display externally hyperactive behaviors.

Girls and adult women, on the other hand, learn to be far more cautious with their reactions. This is especially true if you come from a collective Southern or Eastern culture, where women are strongly socialized to conform to societal expectations. As a result, ADHD masking in women becomes a primary coping mechanism. Happy to share a training program around this topic!

Understanding the Internal Struggle

When it comes to executive dysfunction at work or focusing in traditional academic settings, you feel the difference internally. You perceive the world from a distinct angle. Your core values, such as a deep need for freedom, spontaneous connection, and authentic self-expression can feel at odds with rigid demands for external self-control.

Because some of these focus challenges can overlap with natural behavioral shifts across different life stages, finding a clear path to an adult ADHD diagnosis can feel confusing.

The Subjectivity of Standard Assessments

In countries like the Netherlands, diagnostic tests rely heavily on observational reports completed by parents or teachers. But many of these metrics are deeply subjective. For example, screeners often ask: "Is your child peaceful at home?"

I often challenge this question: Peaceful for whom? Compared to what?

For women and young girls, this observer bias makes detection especially difficult. We are conditioned from an early age to internalize our struggles, put on a mask, and fit in at all costs.

What Can You Do?

If you are experiencing ongoing daily challenges and suspect you might be neurodivergent, there is immense value in self-exploration. My favorite quote in life is:

Your own self realization is the greatest service you can render the world. (Ramana Maharshi)

A formal medical diagnosis requires a licensed clinical professional. Still, partnering with an ADHD coach for women can provide practical guidance, structure, and validation tailored to how your mind works.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you feel like sitting still or staying focused is an uphill battle?
  • Are you seeking non-judgmental support to navigate daily executive functioning?

Work with a qualified coach and listen to your own experience first. Along the way, you can discover practical strategies, build self-acceptance, and gain a clearer appreciation for who you are and who you want to become.
